There is something about August that always feels like a fresh start. As the school buses begin rolling, classrooms fill back up, and calendars quickly become packed, I can’t help but think of it as a new season of possibilities. Even if you’re long removed from school, there is still something energizing about this time of year. It’s a chance to refocus, reset priorities, and get ready for what always seems to become one of the busiest stretches of the year.
July certainly kept us moving!
One of the highlights of the month was celebrating Alabama’s brightest young civic minds during the National Civics Bee® Alabama State Finals. Watching students confidently discuss the importance of civic engagement and their ideas for strengthening their communities is a powerful reminder that the future of Alabama is in good hands. A big congratulations to all of our finalist and especially to Jay Kim from Auburn who will be representing us at the national finals in October. Special shout out to our regional partners: Mountain Lakes Chamber of Commerce, North Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and Opelika Chamber for another great year.
We also had the privilege of welcoming another outstanding class of students to the Huntingdon Economic & Community Development Scholars Program. Investing in future leaders and introducing them to the incredible opportunities that exist across our state is one of the most rewarding partnerships we have, and we can’t wait to see where their journeys take them. Thank you to all the chambers who nominated students to attend!
Behind the scenes, we have already begun planning for 2027. While next year may seem a long way off, great events, programs, and member experiences don’t happen overnight. We’re excited about what’s ahead and are working to ensure Alabama Chambers continues providing the resources and opportunities you expect from your state association.
July also brought opportunities to strengthen relationships across our network. I enjoyed catching up with Robin Ricks, executive director of EDAA, over lunch to share ideas and discuss the important work happening across Alabama. Collaboration is the key to success for all, and I look forward to continued conversation on how we can better work with our economic development partners across Alabama. Earlier in the month, I was honored to spend time with the Millbrook Area Chamber’s Executive Committee during their orientation, talking about governance, leadership, and building a strong foundation for the future.
Finally, we had the opportunity to celebrate an incredible career as Crystal Brown retired after years of dedicated service to her community and the chamber profession. Crystal’s leadership, commitment, and passion have made a lasting impact, and we wish her nothing but the very best in this next chapter.
As we turn the page to August—or as I affectionately call it, “Augtober”—I know the pace is about to pick up even more. Conference season, fall events, strategic planning, legislative preparation, and year-end goals are all just around the corner. I hope you’ll take a moment to enjoy this season of fresh beginnings before the whirlwind truly begins- hopefully with a PSL in hand.
